The Claim

An abandoned and revengeful dog traveled 100km to bite its owner.

Emerging story

A social media post slowly spreading alleges that a dog, left at home by its owner, traveled 100km to find and bite the owner. With users responding “A-holes deserved it!” and “this dog is a Scorpio,” the picture of a water-logged and seemingly happy shepherd-mix accompanies the headline.

Misbar’s Analysis

Fortunately, this post originated as satire. The website ThereIsNews.com first published the article in 2018. The story jokes that when reunited and bitten, the owner’s yell could be heard from Albuquerque, New Mexico, all the way to the Grand Canyon which is almost 400 miles away. (Although the headline strangely uses the kilometers measurement.)

With the headline “Not real, but so funny,” ThereIsNews.com is also home to satirical articles such as “

Pope Francis cancels The Bible and proposes to create a new boo,” and a story stating that Ikea admitted its meatballs are made from lost shoppers who could not find the store’s exit. The story is believable because pets have been known to travel long distances for various reasons.

Scientists are not really sure how animals are able to navigate from so far away to a location known to them, such as a home.
