Posts are circulating on social media which claim that Indian wrestler Priya Malik has won gold in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the wrestling category. Many users shared the news and expressed their congratulations and support to the wrestler.
Misbar’s Analysis
This circulating claim is misleading. A search on the official Olympics website did not reveal that Malik won nor participated at the Tokyo Olympics. After a quick investigation, it was revealed that while the wrestler did win first place in wrestling, it was not at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics but rather at another international wrestling competition. Malik took gold at the 2021 World Cadet Wrestling Championship in Budapest, Hungary, on the 25th of July.
At the same time, on the 26th of July, another Indian weightlifter, Mirabai Chanu, took silver for lifting 202 kg in the women’s 49kg category. The misleading claim likely started due to the close timing of the two winnings.
