The Claim

A medal confusion for figure skating occurred at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Emerging story

A video shared thousands of times depicts three athletes being awarded medals, with the one in third place mistakenly receiving a gold medal. After realizing the mistake, she then respectfully places it on the neck of the first-place winner. The video background appears to be a skating arena, and athlete attire indicates the sport is figure ice skating.  The video has the text “Olympics Mistake Moment,” and the accompanying claim is that this incident occurred at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, currently taking place.

Misbar’s Analysis

The Misbar team found the circulating video to be misleading. The video background and athlete attire indicate the sport is figure ice skating. However, the current Tokyo Olympics is a summer Olympics and does not have ice skating in the sporting categories. Therefore, the incident could not have occurred then, and the next Winter Olympics will take place in 2022 in Beijing, China.

After an investigation, the Misbar team found that the circulating video had occurred at the ISU Grand Prix Figure Skating Internationaux de France 2019/20 competition. An original video has been posted on YouTube on 10 November 2019.

International news organizations also reported the mix-up.

Given the findings, the Misbar team confirms that the video is misleading and could not have occurred at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. It is the summer Olympics, and that the mix-up happened at a figure skating competition in France in November 2019.
