Emerging story
In early August, several media channels reported that former President Yar’Adua’s son Aminu was arrested in Yola for killing four people while driving dangerously on June 23, 2021.
Misbar’s Analysis
The Yar’Adua family has been an influential aristocratic family in both Nigeria’s political landscape and its business sector for several generations. The late Musa Yar’Adua once held the position of Matawalli (custodian of the treasury of the Katsina Emirate), formerly held by his father. He was an administrator who served as Minister of Lagos Affairs during Nigeria’s first republic. His two sons, the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua (Nigeria’s 13th president), were also both distinguished politicians during their time.
However, while it is true that Aminu is a member of the Yar’Adua family, he is not the son of the late president. Rather, he is actually the son of the elder Yar’Adua, late Gen. Shehu Musa Yar’Adua.
According to ThisDay, a family source said that Aminu actually works with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. This was verified further by the BBC Hausa, which was told that “he was the son of the late General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, Olusegun Obasanjo's deputy during Obasanjo's presidency." Further, "he is the youngest son of Hajia Binta, wife of the late Shehu Yar'Adua."
