Emerging story
On August 7th Chicago Police Department officer Ella French and her partner were involved in a shooting during a traffic stop. Officer French succumbed to her injuries, and social media users began reporting that she had recently returned from maternity leave. They mourned the loss of the young officer and lamented her leaving behind a two-month-old infant daughter.
Misbar’s Analysis
Officer French did not leave behind an infant. French’s brother, Andrew, told the Chicago Sun-Times that she was not married and had no children, contrary to social media claims. French was shot during a routine traffic stop for an out-of-date tag. The suspect shot both French and her partner and her partner and remains hospitalized. The suspect was shot while being apprehended later and is also hospitalized.
Reports of a child may stem from French’s heroic actions in July. After a mass shooting in the Englewood suburb of Chicago, French transported a one-month-old baby to the hospital after it was grazed in the head by a bullet. Chicago’s homicides are noticeably increasing yearly, with 336 homicides recorded in only the first six months of 2021. This year is expected to surpass last year’s record high of 1,692 homicides.
