Misbar’s Analysis
We concluded that the federal government did not abandon two busloads of illegal immigrants in front of a Mexican restaurant in Green Cove Springs, Florida. The Consulate of Mexico in Orlando was holding a mobile event at La Casita Mexican restaurant to offer various services. The individuals at the restaurant were not illegal immigrants and were there to receive these services.
At the restaurant, participants could receive COVID-19 vaccinations, renew Mexican passports, receive identification cards, register to vote, and handle other documents. The Orlando Consulate advertised the event on Twitter and it was covered by the local news site Clay Today.
The Green Cove Springs Police Department responded to the controversy on Facebook. In their post, the department said: “The Mexican Consulate was in Green Cove Springs assisting local Mexicans in obtaining proper identification, documents, COVID testing/vaccines, and other social services. City and County officials were aware of this event. The Consulate performed the function of many other consulates successfully and without incident. The Green Cove Springs Police Department (or any other public safety agency) did not have any calls for service at the location. Internet ‘Trolls’ post false information like this for personal and political motives.”
Jacksonville area news organization First Coast News also looked into the claim. In their article, they quote Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook as saying, “This event was pre-planned and scheduled. Folks who receive shots have to show proper identification. This was NOT an ‘illegals dump.' LaCasita has been a long friend of this community.”
