Emerging story
Social media users and news sites shared an image of a girl looking back at the burning fires of her town. The claim is that the fire is of the recent outbreak in the Kabylie region in Algeria.
Misbar’s Analysis
Giorgos Moutafis took the image for the German newspaper Bild of the Greece fires, which coincided with the fires in Algeria. It was also shared in a news clip on their Youtube page. The photo shows three-year-old Valentina looking back from the car at the fires.
Algeria had recorded 103 fires in 17 provinces of the country, the Director-General of Forests told APS. However, the circulating image is unrelated to those fires and is therefore found to be misleading.
