Misbar’s Analysis

We discovered that the mansion featured in this viral claim is not owned by the president of a teachers' union. The mansion, located at 924 Bel Air Road in Los Angeles, is 38,000 square feet and features 12 bedrooms and 21 bathrooms.

When it was first introduced to the market in 2017 it was the most expensive home in America with a $250 million price tag. After being on the market for two years, the price was slashed and it was sold for a mere $94 million.

Whoever bought the lavish mansion has managed to keep their identity a mystery. A rumor in 2020 claimed that L.A. businessperson Charles Cohen purchased the home, something he later denied. Another rumor is that Saudi billionaire Fawaz Alhokair is the current owner but this has yet to be proven. Regardless of who owns the home, one thing that’s clear is the mansion’s price is well beyond anything a teachers' union president could afford.

The two largest teachers’ unions in the United States are the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Becky Pringle, the president of the NEA, earned a total of $361,390 in 2020. The president of the AFT, Randi Weingarten, earned $453,453 that same year. This is according to the Online Public Disclosure Room search, which makes the salary of union presidents public.

Therefore, with her current salary, the AFT president would have to spend more than 200 years’ worth of her current annual salary to buy the $94 million mansion. It would take the NEA president around 260 years before she could afford the home.
