The Claim

Following the Taliban’s swift takeover of Afghanistan, they announced their intent to execute 229 Christian missionaries.

Emerging story

This week, people have been spreading the claim on social media. Without citing a reputable source, they have been saying that the Taliban are planning on killing 229 Christian missionaries.

Misbar’s Analysis

MENA: There’s no evidence to support this claim. Besides social media posts, there are no news articles saying that missionaries are going to be executed in Afghanistan.

Some posts say that pastor Jack Hibbs is the source. On his official Facebook page, he denies that he sent any emails and notes that, for whatever reason, his name is often used in fake posts.

The claim resembles another debunked claim from 2009, which said that 22 people were to be executed. It’s unknown why the number went up to 229 or if the two claims are related.
