Emerging story
Social media accounts, particularly Facebook, are circulating a claim that Algeria could expel Israel from the African Union (AU). The news comes weeks after the Chairperson of the African Union Commission announced Israel would become an observer state.
Misbar’s Analysis
MENA: On July 22nd, the Israeli ambassador to Ethiopia announced that his country was granted observer status at the AU after meeting with the Chairperson of the Union.
While Algeria did not expel Israel from the African Union, they did release an official objection to the decision. Algeria also led diplomatic efforts with six other African and Arab countries to expel Israel from the AU. This was done by jointly submitting a memorandum to the African Union Commission objecting to granting Israel observer status and requesting a reversal.
Despite the attempts, Israel remains an observer state in the AU. Other nations such as South Africa have also objected, calling the decisions 'unjust and unwarranted’, which was made without consulting member states. Misbar confirms the claim as misleading, and Algeria’s efforts to expel Israel from the AU were unsuccessful.
