The Claim

President Biden needed a teleprompter to tell him when to walk off stage.

Emerging story

On August 16, President Joe Biden addressed the country about the United States' withdrawal from Afghanistan. Soon after, social media users posted a screen capture that appears to display Biden’s speech on the teleprompter, which allegedly ended with “leave now.” One user commented that “Biden is completely incapable of independent thought,” and others implied that he needed the teleprompter to give him the cue to leave.

Misbar’s Analysis

The photo circulating has been digitally manipulated. The teleprompter can be seen clearly from footage of the event. It stays in the shot for almost 20 seconds, where the circulated image was obviously taken from, and never displays the words “leave now.”

More clues point out the obvious attempt at deception and manipulation.

The same exact sized and the angled line was placed along each line of text, and only the manipulated section shows such a massive deviation from the expected path. The kerning, which is a term describing the spacing between two letters in a font, is also inconsistent with the rest of the text on the screen: The space on the right side and the left side of the “o” in “now” show different spacing between letters. This resulted from a sloppy attempt to get the letters to conform to the correct line of perspective.
