Misbar’s Analysis

Our investigation concluded that the viral video was not filmed during the 2021 earthquake in Haiti but rather nearly three years earlier in Alaska. The August 14 quake that rocked Haiti resulted in more than 2,200 deaths. It was one of the worst earthquakes to hit the small island nation since the 7.0 tremor in 2010 that led to hundreds of thousands of deaths. However, the widely shared video was filmed during a 2018 earthquake in Alaska.

The 7.0 magnitude tremor struck Alaska on November 30, 2018. A home video of the quake was shared the same day on Twitter by user James Easton. This same video has been miscaptioned several times with claims that it was filmed during other earthquakes. The most recent claim that it was filmed during the August quake in Haiti is just one more example of the video being labeled incorrectly.
