The Claim

A mother wrote an article about buying her 10-year-old daughter a dildo.

Emerging story

A screenshot has been circulating on social media which appears to show an excerpt of an article about a mother who bought her 10-year-old daughter a sex toy. “Yes, I Bought my 10-Year-Old Daughter a Dildo” the headline reads, “And That’s Perfectly Okay.”

The article was allegedly written by a contributor named Gracie Schwartz, and the excerpt goes on to describe how she helped her daughter to pick out a sex toy with a dark, flesh color. “I was privately overjoyed when she chose the diverse one because I knew that the inclusiveness coaching we took last year had gotten through to her,” it reads at the end.

Misbar’s Analysis

The circulating screenshot is an altered version of an article containing a different headline and different content. The original article is titled, “Sex-Positive Parenting: Yes, Talk To Your Kids About Sex,” and is by a writer named “Gracie X.”

The writer describes how educating her children on sex, love, and relationships is an important part of what she believes is good parenting. “It's right up there with keeping them out of danger, teaching them to respect the environment, and making them responsible for their own actions,” she writes.

The author never mentions “inclusiveness coaching,” (Screenshot).

She includes several links to sources that support her ideas, including a study that compares abstinence-only sexual education to comprehensive sexual education

The author then tells the story about how her daughter accidentally found a sex toy in a drawer in her bedroom. When her daughter approached her about it, they had an open conversation in which she explained how masturbation is a private activity and can be a way to learn about herself so that she can better communicate with partners as she gets older.

She never says that she bought her daughter a dildo or any kind of sex toy. Furthermore, she never mentions “inclusiveness coaching.”

The headline has been edited since its original posting. An earlier version is “Why I Taught My Daughter What A Vibrator Was When She Was 10 Years Old,” though the rest of the article remains the same. The reason for this edit is unknown.
