Old Image Shared as Tunnel From Recent Palestinian Prison Escape
The image is not related to the current prison escape (Twitter).

The Claim

Image depicting tunnel used by Palestinian prisoners in recent escape.

Emerging story

An image is being shared across social media in English and Arabic, depicting a tunnel dug out. The tunnel is shared as the one dug out by six Palestinian prisoners who had escaped the Gilboa Prison today.

Misbar’s Analysis

MENA: After an investigation, the image was misleading and not associated with the recent Gilboa prison escape. Tin Eye revealed that the image circulating has been online since 2015, as seen below.

Upon further investigation, the Misbar team found the image posted earlier in August 2014 on the Israeli media site Channel 12. A screenshot of the page can be seen below.

The tunnel was related to another attempted escape from the same prison in 2014, thwarted by Israeli prison security. The real tunnel is more widespread on social media and is pictured below.

The six Palestinians successfully escaped the heavily guarded concrete Gilboa prison by digging a tunnel. Their whereabouts are still unknown. In light of the above, the Misbar team confirms the claim is misleading. The image is not related to the current prison escape but rather a failed escape from the same prison in 2014.
