The Claim

Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro tweeted, “If you need any proof that American masculinity is under attack, just go and see a marriage counselor and watch how quickly the conversation devolves into a bunch of nonsense regarding the so-called ‘sexual needs’ of your wife.”

Emerging story

This summer social media users have been sharing a tweet that appeared to be from Ben Shapiro, right-wing activist and controversial pundit who started The Daily Wire. “If you need any proof that American masculinity is under attack, just go and see a marriage counselor and watch how quickly the conversation devolves into a bunch of nonsense regarding the so-called ‘sexual needs’ of your wife,” the tweet read.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found no evidence the original tweet ever existed. The first appearance of the tweet is a Reddit post from a year ago, and the date of Shapiro’s supposed tweet is different from the recent versions: August 21, 2020.

Shapiro’s Twitter page does not contain the post, nor does his Facebook account. Shapiro’s Twitter account was archived twice on August 21, 2020, and neither shows the tweet. The second interaction of the faked tweet, where the date, retweets, and likes have changed, is on a day when the account was not archived, but still, no proof exists.
