The Claim

27,000 unrecorded mail-in ballots in Georgia prove that Trump won the 2020 election.

Emerging story

A recent report from the website “Public Interest Legal” claimed that 27,000 mail-in ballots in Georgia from the 2020 Presidental Election were undeliverable. The report claims that the 27,000 ballots were directed to faulty addresses before being filled in. The claim has been shared by a number of unreliable news sources and on social media accounts, with the content of these posts either implying or stating that this proves that President Biden stole the 2020 election from former President Trump.

These posts have gained a significant amount of attention, with some posts receiving hundreds of interactions within 24 hours.

Misbar’s Analysis

The original report that 27,000 mail-in ballots were undeliverable in Georgia does not indicate voter fraud, as the ballots were not filled in by voters. The report states that the 27,000 mail-in ballots were undeliverable because they were directed to faulty voter addresses and returned back to their sources as undeliverable, without filled-in votes. The reasons for these undeliverable addresses are hard to determine, but they do not indicate voter fraud.

A more likely explanation is that voters incorrectly entered their addresses when registering for mail-in ballots. The address for completed ballots was pre-printed on the envelopes, confirming that no completed votes were undeliverable, as this address was not ambiguous or incorrectly filled in.

Prior to the election, local news sources in Georgia highlighted how voters who hadn’t received their mail-in ballots could identify and correct the issues. This included tracking the status of their ballots online or canceling the ballot and voting in person.

Even if these mail-in ballots had resulted in votes not being tallied (which did not happen) this would not have been likely to benefit former President Trump. Mail-in voters in Georgia favored Biden over Trump by an almost 2:1 ratio.

Lastly, in the aftermath of the 2020 election, Georgia’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, who is a Republican, conducted a number of investigations into his state’s presidential election.  He stated that he could not find any fraud that could have affected the final result.
