The Claim

COVID-19 vaccines have not passed animal studies.

Emerging story

A number of people across the U.S. have turned to the farm animal version of the drug ivermectin to treat coronavirus, despite a lack of evidence for its effectiveness. The Food and Drug Administration has had to warn people about the dangers of this activity. Those who believe that ivermectin has benefits against coronavirus have begun posting a meme that portrays people making fun of ivermectin takers as hypocritical. This meme claims that the coronavirus vaccines did not pass animal studies.

These posts have managed to gain hundreds or even thousands of interactions within days of appearing online.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation has found significant proof that every coronavirus vaccine available in the U.S. has passed animal studies. The FDA has stated that animal testing would be critical to assess the protection that coronavirus vaccines offer and that they would be considered before moving on to further testing. Similarly, Americans for Medical Progress has clarified that no coronavirus vaccine was tested without being studied on animals.

Also, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine stated that every single coronavirus vaccine in America was tested on animals. The source stated that the animals used in these tests were mice, rats, hamsters, and monkeys.  For example, in March 2020, The National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases stated that phase 1 human trials of the Moderna vaccine had begun after this vaccine had shown promise in animal models.
