The Claim

Turkey has issued a special postage stamp in honor of India's prime minister.

Emerging story

For the past several weeks, a claim has been circulating which states that Turkey has issued a commemorative postage stamp for India's prime minister Narendra Modi. Several posts state in Hindi, “The Muslim nation Turkey has issued a postage stamp for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We must not stop criticizing him and calling him a thief.”

Misbar’s Analysis

MENA: Misbar’s investigation found the claim to be misleading. Turkey issued commemorative postage stamps in 2015 for all world leaders involved in the G20 Antalya Summit. These stamps included German chancellor Angela Merkel, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister Modi and many others. They were not exclusive to Modi.

In November 2015, the G20 Turkey Summit’s official Twitter announced the stamps’ release. The collection was also shared on popular stamp collecting messageboards.
