Emerging story
A number of recent social media posts have shared the news that billionaire investor and philanthropist George Soros had been “caught funneling” money into a group that was pushing to inundate the U.S. with Afghan refugees.
These posts have linked to articles that proceed to state that Soros is determined to flood the U.S. with immigrants. And the social media posts themselves have made claims that these refugees will be unvetted.
Misbar’s Analysis
MENA: Misbar’s investigation found that the purpose of the Soros-funded organization is not to increase the number of Afghan refugees to the U.S. but to help already admitted Afghan refugees. The organization is named Welcome.US, and on the home page of its website, it summarizes its activities as working to welcome and support Afghan refugees as they acclimatize to U.S. communities.
In the Learn More section of Welcome.US’s website, there is no reference to any effort to increase the Afghan refugee population. We could also find no references to increasing refugee intake on any other section of the website. Similarly, high-quality news reports about Welcome.US do not state that the organization’s goal is to increase the number of refugees but help those who have moved to the country. The reports also state that refugees who are already U.S. citizens and permanent residents are able to move to their desired locations, but that all others will be screened in military bases.
Opens Society Foundations, an organization founded and chaired by George Soros, is a sponsor of Welcome.US., but there is no indication that this fact was ever concealed. This makes the headlines that state that Soros was “caught” funding the group misrepresentative of the truth.
