Emerging story
Cryptocurrency’s rise in popularity coincides with its controversy. Recently, social media users began sharing an image of text, reportedly from American football player Tim Tebow. The text of the image refers to recent events as foretelling the upcoming rapture, including lines like, “The government might be preparing us for a cashless society… I’m not worried about what is going to happen, but just looking up and getting ready.” Facebook users commented, “My heart belongs to you, Lord, “ and others used praying emojis.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation found that there is no record of Tebow ever writing or saying this. The text appears to have originated during the summer of 2020 when two different social media accounts used the same wording in posts. On July 11, a Bible-focused Facebook account posted the following:
The account, 365 Days In The Word, describes itself vaguely as a source of daily biblical inspiration, and its ties to later iterations of the text are unknown. The next appearance is a few days later, on July 25. The Twitter account @BattleBornThom made a tweet with slightly altered language from the original.
While these accounts post the first instances, not a single one of Tim Tebow’s social media accounts has this text. Tebow is known for his evangelical Christianity, and often posts and speaks about religion. Regardless, no evidence points to Tebow having written these words, and we find the image to be a fake.
