The Claim

Gibraltar’s delta variant coronavirus surge, which occurred despite 99% of adults being fully vaccinated, proves that vaccines are ineffective.

Emerging story

A viral social media video and a number of social media posts have used the spread of the delta variant in the British territory of Gibraltar to claim that coronavirus vaccines do not work. The video and the posts claim that despite having a 99% adult vaccination rate, Gibraltar was heavily impacted by the delta variant.

Both the video and posts have gained a significant amount of interactions. One upload of the video has gained over 10,000 views. Social media posts have gained thousands of interactions.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the coronavirus vaccination effort in Gibraltar was successful, as there were virtually no deaths from coronavirus during the delta variant surge. The World Health Organization states that between March 22nd and September 27th, 2021, there were just three deaths due to coronavirus in the territory. During the same span of time, there were over 100,000 deaths in the US, which had a much lower vaccination rate.

This data reveals that coronavirus vaccines are effective. As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website states, fully vaccinated people can still contract coronavirus. But when fully vaccinated people contract the disease, the symptoms are significantly less severe, and hospitalization and death are much less likely to occur.
