Emerging story
In early October 2021, several social media users circulated a photo they claimed was taken recently during a helicopter evacuation of children in Cyclone Shaheen-hit Oman.
Photo shows a screenshot taken from a Twitter account alleging the photo is taken in “Oman now” as children are being evacuated as a result of Cyclone Shaheen.
Misbar’s Analysis
We investigated the claim and verified that it is misleading; the photo was not taken during the latest Cyclone Shaheen. Instead, the photo was taken in May 2020, when the Omani Air Force operated to evacuate a group of citizens based in Dhofar Governorate’s Shalim and Halaniyat Islands Wilayats. The area was hit by heavy rainfall, causing a significant rise in water levels.
Cyclone Shaheen has recently hit several areas in Oman’s Sultanate, causing heavy rainfall and strong winds.
