Qatar has just recently added IS-Sinai to its list of designated terror organizations.

Social media accounts and pages have recently circulated a claim that Qatar has only recently decided to designate ISIS in the Sinai as a terrorist organization.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the claim and verified that it was misleading. Qatar’s national counter-terrorism committee has already added ISIS’s offshoot in the Sinai on its terror watchlist since March 2018.

Qatar’s designation of IS-Sinai as a terrorist organization along with 20 individuals and eight entities was reported in a statement at the time by the country’s counterterrorism committee.

The committee’s statement also said that Qatar remains an active member in the international alliance against ISIS. Its efforts go well beyond merely combating terrorism and into working to eradicate the phenomenon once and for all comprehensively.
