The Claim

A clip of a waterspout at sea is cyclone Shaheen moving inwards to land.

Emerging story

A video clip circulating on social media shows a waterspout claim it depicts the cyclone Shaheen which recently hit Oman and some parts of Iran. The clip has been viewed thousands of times across various networking sites.

Misbar’s Analysis

A Google reverse image search was conducted, and various waterspouts were compared until a video from 2019 was found. The exact video was found uploaded on Youtube on 23 November 2019, titled “Pakistan Balochistan Gawader”, as seen below.

Upon further research, an article published on the same day reported that Torrential rain had hit parts of Balochistan, further confirming the video. The article also mentioned that rain and thundershowers were likely to occur in several areas, including Gwadar.

The occurrence of cyclone Shaheen in Oman has led to various misleading clips and claims being circulated. Based on the findings, the Misbar team can confirm that the circulating video is misleading and does not depict cyclone Shaheen in Oman but rather a waterspout in the Gwadar region of Pakistan in 2019.
