The Claim

A picture depicts advanced graves in Japan.

Emerging story

Social media users shared a picture alleging it shows advanced graves in Japan. Users claimed that the graves are equipped with a special code, which shows photos, information, and a brief biography of the life of the dead.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s team unveiled that these are photos of a memorial in China dedicated to the victims of World War II. On April 1, 2015, the official Chinese news agency reported that this monument is located in Chongqing Municipality, southwest China.

Several Chinese websites published the image in the context of news about establishing an online memorial for the victims of World War II. They attributed it to the official Chinese news agency China News Service.

The agency said that the monument works through a visitor's QR code scanning technology to commemorate the victims of the "Nanjing Massacre" Perpetrated by Japan in China during World War II. Visitors can light candles, present flowers, ring bells, and plant trees.
This claim is added to a series of misleading publications about technological and scientific development in Japan, which is not valid. These tombs have nothing to do with Japan but are memorials in China for the victims of World War II.
