The Claim

A video depicts Indian Muslims fighting back the authorities over the current unrest in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Emerging story

Along with the ongoing unrest in Kashmir, there were loads of disinformation. A circulating video online alleges that Indian Muslims were fighting back against the authorities.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the claim by using search engines to search for different frames from the video by doing a reverse image search. We managed to confirm that this video does not belong to the current situation in Kashmir or any other Indian city.

We figured out that this video is a little bit old and emerged on the internet on March 5, 2020.

One of India’s leading newspapers, The Times of India,  published the video at that time, explaining that the footage was shot on the second day of the Delhi riots on February 24, 2020.

In the circulated video, credible local media outlets reported that Stones and bricks showered Delhi cops by protesters against the controversial law (India's Citizenship (Amendment) Act).

The riots began in North East Delhi after a set-in of women against India's Citizenship (Amendment) Act got dispersed. Later, Hindu and Muslims were equally involved in violent attacks.

Meanwhile, Kashmir is developing escalation accompanied by gun battles between the Indian authorities and suspected militants.
