The Claim

Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visits Israel’s pavilion at the Expo 2020 held in Dubai.

Emerging story

A claim is widely circulating on social media that former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited the Israel pavilion at the Expo 2020 hosted by Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The claim is also accompanied by an image of the Former President smiling with a young woman, whom some users say is Israeli.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar started an investigation into the claim. We scanned images and articles related to Ahmadinejad’s vis and found no evidence of visiting the Israeli pavilion, such as flags or emblems.  Moreover, according to his bio, Itamar Eichner, Diplomatic correspondent for Yedioth Ahronot newspaper, posted a tweet refuting that  Ahmadinejad’s visited Israel’s pavilion at the Expo.

Furthermore, Fereshteh Sadeghi,  Al Jazeera English producer, posted a tweet referring that Ahmadinejad’s communication office debunked rumors against him on Twitter.

This tour is Ahmadinejad's first international trip since the end of his presidency in 2013. However, it was cut short by Emirati officials who urged him to leave the country. Based on the findings, the Misbar team confirms the claim is misleading, and while he did visit the Expo in Dubai, he did not visit Israel’s exhibition.
