Emerging story
New websites circulated news that Algeria will completely abandon the French language in all its official departments by the end of the following year.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation found that title was misleading. Only two Algerian Ministries decided to end dealing with the French language in their official correspondences.
The decision to abandon the French language in Algerian official institutions will be made gradually and affect ministries and other sectors more important than the Ministry of Vocational Training, Youth and Sports.
Most official institutions use the French language and the Arabic language in their correspondence and statements, and there are government departments that use French only.
The Ministries of Defense and Justice make the only exception in the country, as they use the Arabic language exclusively in all their dealings.
