Emerging story
Several accounts and pages on Facebook and Twitter have circulated a photo alleging it shows Sudanese protesters shot. Users claimed forces injured the protesters from the Sovereignty Council of Sudan led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and from the Janjaweed in front of the General Command headquarters in Khartoum on Monday, Oct. 25, 2021.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and found that it was misleading. The photo is older than claimed and was posted earlier on June 3, 2019, as part of a crackdown on protesters in front of the General Command office in Khartoum, which led to several casualties, including deaths.
The photo shows the actual date of June 3, 2019, when the picture was first published.
The recent circulation of the photo coincides with the killing of three people by the Transitional Military Council (TMC) on Monday, Oct. 25, of this month, according to the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors (CCSD). The incident was followed by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan announcement to dissolve Sudan’s Sovereign Council and the civilian government. Al-Burhan also declared a state of emergency in the country, suspended several articles, introduced emergency laws, and arrested PM Abdalla Hamdok and members of his Cabinet.
Sudan’s CCSD issues a statement confirming the third case of death by live fire.
