The Claim

A Muslim man attempts to drug his Hindu girlfriend to rape her.

Emerging story

A video with English captions is being widely circulated on social media from India. The video depicts a young man and woman in a cafe and the man attempting to spike the girl’s drink before being seen by the vigilant cashier and handed over to the authorities. The accompanying claim is that the Muslim man tried to drug the woman, a Hindu, and rob her of her honor, implying rape her. Users warned women to be more alert to avoid such incidents.

Misbar’s Analysis

An investigation into the claim revealed that the circulating is misleading. While most of the users shared a video of 2 minutes and 20 seconds or less, some users shared a more extended version of approximately 3 minutes and 24 seconds. The longer video shares the following message seen below.

In small, yellow font at the bottom of the screen, the video spreads an awareness message. Using this information and selecting keywords, Facebook was searched to reveal the source of the video. Hamsa Nandini had posted the video in October 2020, as seen below.

Hamsa is an Indian actress with 2.9 million followers, known for her work in Telugu cinema. Her Facebook account has numerous awareness videos of a similar nature, with the latest one posted today. Nonetheless, it is clear that the video is not real but has been produced for educational and public awareness reasons. Given the findings, the Misbar team confirms that the claim is misleading, and religion had no part in the video.
