The Claim

Mohammad Nabi financed the Afghan national cricket team when the Taliban refused to support it.

Emerging story

According to social media users, the Taliban have refused to sponsor the country's national cricket team. As a result, the team's captain, Mohammad Nabi, paid for their participation in the T20 World Cup with his own money.

Misbar’s Analysis

The claim was investigated and found to be false. While it is true that the Afghan government did not support the national cricket team, neither did captain Nabi, according to a relevant keyword search and a scan of trustworthy news sources. The Sediki Grup has displayed in the footer of the Afghan Cricket Board's (ACB) official website. As shown below, the ACB also posted the information on its official, verified Twitter account.

With an offer of $450,000, the Sediki Grup was the top bidder and became the official sponsor of the Afghan National Cricket Team. According to their website, the corporation is involved in the property, building, commerce, and gold industries.

Furthermore, while the Taliban did not fund the national team, they have often proclaimed their support for the cricket squad. Based on the findings, the Misbar team finds that the allegation is false and that Nabi did not support his team; nonetheless, the Sediki Grup is the official sponsor. The T20 Cricket World Cup will be held in the United Arab Emirates and Oman from October 17 to November 14, 2021.
