Emerging story
The Sudanese police held a press conference on November 18 to show videos of protesters allegedly attacking police officers on November 17.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar verified the circulated claim and found that it was misleading. The videos shown by the Sudanese police in the press conference were two old clips, previously published in February 2020. They depicted demonstrations that the country witnessed on February 20, 2020, which was known as the march of a Million Give Back.
The first short clip, which is part of a longer video, starts at minute 6.57 and ends at approximately 7.05.
Another clip shown by the Sudanese Police, which starts at minute 7.42, was taken from a video posted on February 21, 2020.
On the 20th of February 2020, Million Give Back demonstrations took place in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, which witnessed clashes between security forces and demonstrators, injuring at least 17 people, according to Reuters.
On November 18, the Sudanese police held a press conference in which they presented what they said were scenes of the so-called November 17 “Million Man March” attack on the police forces by protesters. Meanwhile, the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors said, in its last statement today, November 20, that 16 protesters had died due to direct police attacks on the marches. Based on the findings, the Misbar team confirms that the videos are misleading and old, intentionally used to mislead the public.
