Emerging story
Twitter accounts have recently circulated a photo alleging it showed another large group of Ethiopian government troops being held captive by the Tigrayan forces.
Photo Description: The screenshots show the alleged photo shared with the claim on Twitter.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulated claim and found it misleading. The shared photo is outdated; it was taken last October, and it does show Ethiopian government forces being held captive by the Tigrayan forces. The Associated Press took the photo.
Since the withdrawal of the Ethiopian government forces from the Tigray region last June, Tigray media and platforms have published photos and videos that the Tigray People’s Liberation Front said are of captured Ethiopian government forces.
However, Legisi Tolo, a spokesman for the Ethiopian government, said that the Tigray forces have not been able to capture any soldiers affiliated with the Ethiopian government forces since the withdrawal of the Ethiopian government forces from the Tigray region.
