Emerging story
Twitter accounts have recently circulated a piece of news alleging that Toyota has stopped all production of its Land Cruiser and Lexus cars because of an acute shortage in microchips.

Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulated claim and found it misleading. In a press release issued on Thursday, Dec. 9 of this month, Toyota said that the recent supply chain disruptions had forced the Japanese carmaker to cut production by 9,000. Instigated mainly by a shortage in microchips imported from southeast Asia, the reduction in car output is still limited. At the same time, Toyota said that these cuts would impact the company’s production of its four-wheel drive Land Cruiser. However, according to Reuters, Toyota did not say that it would entirely halt the production of the car. This refutes the allegation made on social media.
Mr. Mohammed Naser Al-Sayer, Toyota’s local agent in Kuwait, also refuted the claim in a statement he made via Lexus Kuwait’s official account on Twitter.

This is not the first time Toyota has been forced to scale back its car production. The new cuts add to already existing reductions resulting from supply chain disruptions in Malaysia and Vietnam.
