Emerging story
Twitter accounts have recently circulated a photo of two camels in a desert covered with ice, alleging that it showed the Egyptian city of Saint Catherine on Monday, Dec 20, 2021.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulated claim and found it misleading. The photo was already published on January 10, 2020, via a Twitter account with the handle @Dr_Ahmad_Nabeel. The caption read that the photo (and three others) were taken in Tabuk City’s desert, northern Saudi Arabia.
Many news websites, including the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and weather forecast websites, including the Czech windy, have reshared the photos as part of their reporting.
Since the early hours of Monday morning, it has been snowing in Egypt’s Saint Catherine city, south of Sinai, with temperatures falling below zero.
