The Claim

The FIFA has nominated four teams to win the World Cup 2022, including Italy, Brazil, France, and Algeria.

Emerging story

Social media accounts and pages have recently circulated an alleged statement attributed to the FIFA president Gianni Infantino. In it, he allegedly named four national teams to win the prospective 2022 World Cup. These teams are Italy’s, Brazil’s, France’s, and Algeria’s.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s team has investigated the circulated claim and found that it was fake. The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) President, Gianni Infantino, did not announce the circulating fabricated and baseless news. The FIFA has not made any nominations for the teams that are likely to win the 2022 World Cup. Nor has the official FIFA website published such news. The same goes for all credible news sources.

This claim started to circulate days after Algeria won the Arab Cup 2021 in Qatar, following the team’s victory over Tunisia’s in the final match on December 18. The FIFA did, however, congratulate the Algerian team on winning the title through its World Cup Twitter account, but did not make any reference to the 2022 World Cup.

The Algerian Football Federation president, Charafeddine Amara, said following the crowning of Algeria’s team that the FIFA president admired Algeria’s team during Arab Cup 2021, which he said he would be keen to make sure it is held every year.

The next FIFA World Cup 2022 will be held in Qatar, from Nov. 21 to Dec. 18, 2022, which is the 22nd edition of the tournament. The Algerian national team has not yet qualified for the World Cup finals, and only qualified for the decisive round in the African qualifiers for the tournament, which will be held next March, to determine the five teams that will represent Africa in the World Cup 2022 to be hosted by Qatar.
