Emerging story
Social media accounts and pages have been circulating an image that they claimed was from recent demonstrations that took place in Turkey against the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan after the collapse of the Turkish lira against the US dollar.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and found it to be misleading, as the image is old and not from demonstrations against the Turkish president following the lira depreciation against the US dollar. News sites have been publishing the photo with news related to the Turkish president since 2017.

The photo circulated shows that it is from an old gathering supporting the Turkish president, as banners and pictures bearing Erdogan's name appear among the participants in the gathering. Misbar also found another picture from the same gathering, in which the pictures and banners appear more clearly.

The allegation's circulation comes after the Turkish lira declined against the US dollar recently. However, the lira recovered in the last two days after President Erdogan announced on Monday evening, December 20, a set of measures aimed at protecting citizens' savings in the national currency.
