The Claim

Hisham Abu Hawash's first smile was captured after Israel promised to release him on February 26.

Emerging story

A picture claiming to show the first picture of Hisham Abu Hawash after he ended his 141-day hunger strike is circulating on social media accounts and pages.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the circulated claim and found it was fake; activist Khadija Khweis took this picture of Hisham Abu Hawash in the early days of his hunger strike. Khadija then asked Abu Hawash to smile to the camera, and he did, on condition that she doesn't publish it until after his victory.

On Tuesday, Hisham Abu Hawash ended his strike after reaching a deal with the Israeli Prison administration to be released next month.

Khadija posted the picture today with a caption describing his situation when she asked Hisham to smile. He then replied that he was tired and doesn't have the power to smile.

Khadija asked him to imagine that he had successfully ended his hunger strike and administrative detention. This is when Hisham smiled.

Khaled Mahajneh, a member of the lawyer’s team representing Abu Hawwash, told the newspaper Arabi 21 that Israel had agreed not to renew his administrative detention and that he will be released next month.

Abu Hawwash's administrative detention was frozen this week, and he was moved from Ramleh prison to the Shamir Medical Center near Tel Aviv, where he is being held and heavily guarded. Hisham was admitted to the intensive care unit.

Defying the injustice of his confinement, 40-year-old Hisham Abu Hawash, a father of five, was on hunger strike for more than 140 days.
