According to lifestyle websites and posts shared on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, drinking grape juice can help prevent and treat stomach flu. Since 2017, the claim has been circulating on the internet.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar's team found no evidence that drinking grape juice could help prevent or cure stomach flu.
According to a 1979 study, grape juice is "likely to prevent or modify human enterovirus infections." Even though previous research has shown that grape juice can reduce norovirus symptoms, other stomach flu-causing viruses and bacteria have not been tested in this way.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the stomach flu, or "viral gastroenteritis," is an infection of the intestines that can be contracted through direct contact with an infected person or contaminated food or water.
As reported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), symptoms can include "watery diarrhea, pain or cramping in your abdomen, nausea or vomiting, and, in some cases, fever."
According to medical experts Misbar spoke with, the claim is not supported by scientific evidence.
