Emerging story
Claims are circulating that Spain will no longer require people to wear face masks or get vaccinated against COVID-19 and will instead treat it as a regular flu or an endemic disease.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and discovered it to be false. The first claim is that Spain has decided to repeal the vaccine mandate; however, vaccinations have never been mandatory in Spain. Despite this, Spain has one of the highest vaccination rates in Europe, with 79.3 percent of the total population fully vaccinated and 80.9 percent had received at least one shot. The mask mandate claim is also incorrect; one of the tools being used in Spain to combat the spread of COVID-19 includes "masks being mandatory inside and outside when safe distance cannot be maintained."
Nonetheless, the left-wing government in Spain has called for COVID-19 to be treated like any other endemic respiratory virus, such as seasonal flu. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has recommended that countries transition to a more routine virus handling once the pandemic has passed. COVID-19 once the pandemic's acute phase has passed. According to the report, more European Union countries, including Spain, are expected to adopt “a more long-term, sustainable surveillance approach.” The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned against making any drastic changes, claiming that such a move would be premature.
According to the findings, the claim is misleading because no changes have been made to Spain's mask and vaccine mandates, and no changes have been made to the country's approach to COVID-19.
