Emerging story
A statement from Syria's Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Abdul Latif Hanano, has recently circulated on Facebook pages and accounts, claiming that the world's only free university is in Syria.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the widely circulated claim and found it to be false because Syria is not the only country that provides free university education to its citizens; in fact, many countries worldwide do so.
In Europe, for example, more than seven countries support university education for their citizens, including international students, notably Norway, which offers free or reduced tuition to both kinds. Tuition fees are eliminated in Sweden for European citizens and students.
Although some German universities have begun to charge tuition, the vast majority continue to offer free education to all students.
On Monday, January 31, Syrian Assistant Minister of Higher Education Abdul Latif Hanano stated that "Syria remains the only country in the world that provides free university educational services to all students who wish to enroll in government universities and who have passed university entrance exams."
