Emerging story
Facebook and Twitter pages and accounts recently circulated a video in which the publishers claimed to be returning to the reception of Russian President Vladimir Putin with his dog to Japan's Prime Minister, claiming that Putin intended to deliver several messages in this manner.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the claim and found it misleading, as the video was from 2016. It depicts a group of Japanese journalists brought by Russian President Vladimir Putin with a Japanese Akita-Inu dog given to him by the governor of the Japanese city of Akina, Norrichisa Sataki, in 2012.
The widely circulated claim arose in response to Japan's protests of Russia's launch of missile exercises in the Kuril Islands.
