Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s team investigated the claim and found it fake. The UN Special Envoy to Yemen did not say in his latest address to the UN Security Council that Oman had tricked everyone into believing that once the Houthis controlled Marib City, the war would come to an end. The Envoy did not make this statement in any other address before the Security Council.

Not only that, the Envoy’s latest address before the Security Council on Jan. 12 did not even mention Oman in any way, let alone making that claim about the Gulf state.

Misbar’s team could not find the circulated claim in any of the Envoy’s statements before the Security Council back until September 2021.

The most recent tweet/post published by the account of the Office of the UN Envoy to Yemen on Twitter and Facebook was on Feb. 03. The post/tweet made a statement in reference to the visit of the UN envoy to Muscat, where he met the chief negotiator of the Houthi group, Muhammad Abdul Salam, in addition to Omani officials. The statement read that the UN Special Envoy had stressed the need to take concrete steps to stop the violence and to engage in efforts to reach a sustainable settlement to the conflict in Yemen.
