Emerging story
Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube users have recently shared a satellite video from Ukrainian TV that shows Russian troops leaving their bases and going to the border with Ukraine.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the widely publicized claim and discovered it to be misleading. The video is from August 2018, when the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) monitored the illegal entry and exit of trucks across the Ukrainian border.
The mission in charge of monitoring the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine explained at the time that it was done by drone rather than satellite.
Pro-Russian separatists opposed to Kyiv's new pro-Western authorities declared the establishment of the "Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics" in eastern Ukraine on April 7, 2014, without recognizing any party. Ukraine accuses Russia of supplying fighters and equipment to separatists in the country's east, while Russia denies this.
Despite Russia's denials, the allegation comes as tensions on the Russian-Ukrainian border rise, with warnings of an impending Russian invasion of Ukraine. Several countries have asked their citizens in Ukraine to leave as soon as possible.
