The Claim

A picture depicts the killing of a Ukrainian soldier in a bombing carried out by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Emerging story

Several websites and social media accounts, particularly on Facebook, have been circulating an image purportedly depicting the death of a Ukrainian army soldier by a bomb. Users claim that pro-Russian separatists carried out the bombing in Ukraine's east.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the circulating claim and discovered it to be misleading, as the photo is old and dates back to March 2015. According to Time, the image depicts the aftermath of a bus explosion in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, as seen below.

Description: Images from the March 2015 bus explosion.

The claim came after Kyiv announced the death of a Ukrainian soldier in exchange for shelling with separatist forces in eastern Ukraine on Saturday, February 19. However, according to the findings, the image is unrelated to the incident from a bus explosion in Kharkiv in March 2015.
