Facebook and Twitter users have recently shared a photo claiming that it showed a Russian armored vehicle destroyed by the Ukrainian military on Feb. 24, 2022.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s team investigated the circulated claim and found it misleading. The photo is older than claimed; it was shared earlier in Feb. 2015 with other photos by Ukrainian media outlets. The photos then showed what the Ukrainian military said were military vehicles it destroyed during confrontations with separatists in Donetsk’s city of Debaltseve, southeast of Ukraine.
Following the Ukrainian military’s announcement, the claim started to circulate that it destroyed Russian aircraft and military vehicles in Kherson, south of Ukraine. This comes against the backdrop of president Vladimir Putin’s announcement on Thursday, Feb. 24, of a special military operation in Ukraine.
