Emerging story
Users on Facebook and Twitter have recently circulated a photo purporting to show the ruins in Kyiv caused by Russia's attack on Ukraine last Thursday.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar investigated the circulating claim and found it to be misleading. The photo does not show Kyiv after Russia's most recent attack; it is from February 19, 2014. It depicts clashes between anti-government and anti-police demonstrators and riot police in Kyiv's Independence Square.
During the 2014 protest, also known as "the Revolution of Honour," both protesters and Ukrainian police were killed. Protests erupted against Ukraine's president at the time, Viktor Yanukovych, after he refused to sign an association agreement with the European Union, instead opting to align with Russia.
It is worth noting that the misleading image was widely circulating following Russia's military operation against Ukraine on Thursday, Feb. 24.
