Misleading Video Shared as Victims of the Russian Bombing in Ukraine
A protest in Vienna, Austria (YouTube).

The Claim

The video depicts the fabrication of a film of the victims of the Russian bombing in Ukraine.

Emerging story

Facebook and Twitter have recently circulated a video claiming to be from a fabricated film of the victims of the Russian bombing in Ukraine.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigated the circulated claim and discovered it to be misleading, as the video was old, previously posted on Feb. 4, 2022, by the YouTube account of the Austrian newspaper oe24 to cover a protest in Vienna, Austria, against climate policies. The protest featured a representative display of bodies covered in black bags, in a symbolic sign that failure to combat climate change would result in casualties.

The circulated claim came against the backdrop of the continuation of the Russian attack on Ukraine, which began last Thursday, February 24, 2022. According to the BBC, UN observers said at least 94 Ukrainian civilians were killed during the early days of the war.
