Emerging story
Social media users have circulated an image of a combination of Adolf Hitler's mustache overlayed onto the Russian President Vladimir Putin, purporting to show the new TIME magazine cover comparing the Russian President to the Nazi dictator.
The viral image features the TIME masthead, with a headline: “The Return Of History” and a subheading reading: “How Putin Shattered Europe’s Dreams.”
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar has investigated the claim and found it to be fake. Our team did not find any such cover published by TIME magazine.
However, we discovered that the graphic designer Patrick Mulder created this TIME magazine cover. He confirmed in a tweet that the circulating image is an artwork he designed on the Russian invasion day.
The image was not originally intended to be a TIME cover. But the finished version was so powerful, according to the graphic designer. Patrick has felt that his artwork deserved to be framed in an equally powerful way.
The graphic designer has posted a video of the cover-making process to Twitter on the 27th of February 2022.
The original and authentic TIME magazine’s March edition cover has mentioned the same headline and subheading as the artwork but does not feature Putin or Hitler.
