The Claim

The video depicts Russian President Vladimir Putin praising the Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Emerging story

Social media users have circulated a video claiming it shows Russian President Vladimir Putin praising the Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan just after their meeting in Moscow on the day of invasion.

The video went viral and has got hundreds of views and reactions.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar has investigated the claim and found it to be fake.

The video was edited to include English-language inaccurate subtitles reading: “This week I hosted the Prime Minister of Pakistan, a brave man. He resited Western pressure to accept my invitation to visit Russia.” And also: “We discussed many areas of mutual interest, including Afghanistan and trade cooperation, and soon, I will visit Pakistan to sign a major oil pipeline deal.”

Using Google Image Reverse Search, we found the original version of the video posted on The Guardian’s Youtube channel on the 25th of February, 2022 as: “Putin references neo-Nazis and drug addicts in a bizarre speech to the Russian security council.” The original video’s subtitles did not mention the Pakistani Prime Minister.

Many other Russian news outlets have reported on Putin’s statement. In his speech, the Russian President has described Ukraine’s government as a “band of junkies and neo-Nazis.” He also mentioned that the Ukrainian government “took control of Kyiv and held the whole people of Ukraine hostage.”
